Art has been part of Mathew Daugherty’s life since he can remember. Growing up he constantly drew comic book super heroes and desired to be a comic book artist. From that grew the possibilities of becoming an illustrator then a painter then on to whatever he could think of. In high school, he attend the Governor’s Magnet School for the Arts, for fine arts, where he expanded his mediums for creating art and his knowledge. He then enrolled into the Fine Arts program at Virginia Commonwealth University, in Richmond, Va. There he received a Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree majoring in Painting and Printmaking. In his time at VCU he also took courses outside of his major in Graphic Design and Illustration.

Mathew was also an aspiring musician. He had been playing in bands since the tenth grade and after college he dedicated his time to the band that he was in rather than pursue a career in art. He was still creating art but it was more for the band, in marketing and promotional art, CD cover art, posters, etc. That band was together for seven years and released a CD and played as much as they could but were lost amongst the growing popularity boy bands and one hit wonder pop stars and the emergence of the new wave of punk rock. So in 1999 the band decided to call it quits and move on with their lives.

Mathew was at a crossroad. The last seven years of his life was dedicated to the band. He had no real career to speak of, a college degree that wasn't put to use, not even a health plan. The computer field was growing, the dot com industry was booming, so he bought his first Mac, and starting teaching himself how to use it and all about the world wide web. He then started learning HTML and saw how it was just a different medium to create something visual, like a piece of art that was functional, that had a purpose, that everyone could share, something that was used for fun, for entertainment, for getting information.

Since then Mathew has worked in web design and development for small and large tech companies. He has even worked for Internet giant AOL and currently works for the U.S. government.

In 2000, he started MD Web Design & Development. Still being part of the local music scene he saw how musicians and other struggling artists could not afford the high costs of web companies needed to give them an edge for an online presence to help them grow and become more noticeable to their markets.

Mathew currently resides in Reston, Va with his wife, Leslie, and their children, Andrew, Michael, Connor and Olivia, their Rottweiler - Bailey, cat - Milo and seven turtles.
